Texas Lottery Chronicles- Cash Extravaganza!

That's right, back by popular demand (angerisagift), it's Texas Lottery time again! This time we'll be taking a shot at the big bucks with a $5 Cash Extravaganza scratch-off ticket.

Odds of this ticket becoming a winner is 3.86-1. The top prize is $100K (800K-1 odds. VERY minus EV).

The ticket features 5 different games. In the first game, the object is to match the "Lucky Prize Amounts." Let's pull out our lucky quarter and see what happens.

Although we didn't match the top prize, we did hit for $5, so at worse we'll break even!

On to the second game.

The object in game #2 is to match one of our numbers to the "Winning Numbers" on the left side of the ticket. Let's see if we can keep the momentum headed in our direction :)

Twelve numbers and we whiffed 'em all.

Games 3,4, and 5 are all the same. We want the two amounts in each circle to match. If they do, we win that prize. Don't fail us now lucky quarter!

Too bad matching prizes in any of the circles doesn't count. That hundo would come in handy!

Cash Extravaganza wasn't a winner...but it wasn't a loser either. Guess we'll do what everyone else does and go cash this one in for another $5 ticket.

Mississippi Flush

Most of the readers of this little blog are well versed in poker. They know what beats what, which hands to play from different positions at the table, what your odds are of hitting a draw and whether the pot is giving you those odds.

If you ask any of them what is the best hand in poker, they would tell you a Royal Flush.

And they would be wrong.

The best hand in poker is a "Mississippi Flush."

"What is a Mississippi Flush?" you may ask.

Well, today is your lucky day! Not only are you going to learn what it is, you're also gonna get to hear some Texas Country from one of the old timers of the genre, Ray Wylie Hubbard.

RWH was born in Oklahoma, but got to Texas as fast as he could (1954). After 60 years in the Lone Star State, he has earned his citizenship card. He may not be the best vocalist you've ever heard, but the man knows his way around a six string.

Vegas or Bust Poker League

Our third of twelve league tournaments was held last Friday. We had a full table, with two seats to next summer's WSOP in Vegas at stake.

Taking chairs around the felt were Ollie the Accountant, Big Daddy, Philly Phanatic, Tin Man, Ranger Rick, Bobby Dee, J-Dawg, Lil' Annie Okie, Stamps, and yours truly, Lucki Duck.

Big Daddy had fallen asleep and showed up late to the party, but still managed to go out first. Philly Phanatic followed shortly after that, then Bobby Dee fell on his sword.

Ollie was next to go, then we played through several blind levels before Stamps went busto.

With blind levels reaching critical mass, Lil' Annie Okie went out in fifth. Surprisingly, the final four players traded chips a long time before I received a 4th place toe-tag when my two pair ran into a set.

I hate when that happens. :)

Tin Man captured third then J-Dawg and Ranger Rick played heads up for almost an hour before Rick took down the win.

At the 1/4 mark of the season, things are still jumbled up pretty good, but at least I'm at the top of the jumble, so that's a good thing. Hopefully I can continue to finish near the top each month and make another trip to the Rio!

Cancer Returns-Update

Mom and Dad their senior year of high school.

First of all, thank you for your e-mails, texts, and phone calls asking about Mom and offering encouragement. I greatly appreciate it.

Today is the day she begins six weeks of treatment on her stage 3 cancer. We have carefully chosen to pursue treatment after a lot of discussion. I was pretty sure she would opt for treatment. Mom's a fighter, and fighters fight.

She receives chemo every Monday and radiation five days a week. She's 85 years old and weighs 85 pounds, so obviously I am very concerned with how this is going to play out.

But, you have to admire her spunk.

Send those prayers and positive energy to central Texas.

And as my friend Josie says, "Cancer sucks."

Vegas or Bust Poker League

It's been a busy month around the Duck household, and I realized I haven't posted June's tournament results. Our July tournament is this Friday, so I thought I better get with it if I was going to say anything about last month's.

The tournament was the night before my trip to Las Vegas, so it had been a busy day at work, trying to tie up all the loose ends before taking a week's vacation. I didn't have time to go home before the tournament started, so I headed straight to Tin Man's to pitch some cards, knowing I would have to pack when I got home.

Long day.

J-Dawg had another engagement and missed the tournament, which would normally kill you, but we drop the two lowest scores of each player at the end of the league so a miss won't wipe out your chances.

As I mentioned earlier, the tournament happened several weeks ago, so the hand details have pretty much escaped me, but I do remember a couple.

Philly Phanatic was the first to go, followed by Big Daddy. Bobby Dee went out early, but the rest of us stuck around a while before Ollie the Accountant finally fell on his sword.

Tin Man, who won the first tournament was next, then Stamps let his stack get very short and had to push with a weak ace and was out kicked by a bigger one when the dealing was done.

Ranger Rick played well, but ran into some bad luck late when he called my push and flipped over A-Q, which was well ahead of my 6-4 soooted. I know 6-4 sounds like a bad play, but I was the short stack (5 BB) and felt like I would have a lot of outs if called. I flopped two pair and then boated on the river, crippling Rick, who received his toe-tag on the very next hand.

That left Lil' Annie Okie and I heads up, which is interesting only because we won the two WSOP seats last year.

The blinds were big and we traded chips without seeing too many flops. Annie pushed with K-J and I called with pocket nines. Annie thought she had won the hand when she paired her jack on the river, but quickly realized that the jack had given me a straight.

Sometimes it's better to be lucky lucki than good :)

I have a first and a second place finish in our first two tourneys, which gets me out of the gate in good shape. Hopefully, I'll be able to make a strong showing again Friday.
