Casino Party

As many of you know, Ms. Duck and I have a sideline business that provides casino parties to the locals.

Last Friday we did a rush party for one of the fraternities at Baylor University. Although it was a small one, with two blackjack tables, one poker and one craps, we had a great time.

It's a lot of work putting one of these on, but we are paid well and enjoy the parties. With Ms. Duck out of work, the money is welcome :)

Here are a few pictures from Friday's festivities. Good times!

Texas Lottery Chronicles- Dallas Cowboys

I received a $5 scratch-off lottery ticket titled "Trim the Tree" as a stocking stuffer this Christmas and it got me to wondering how bad an investment a lottery ticket really is. On the back of the ticket it states that my odds are 1:3.83, and that includes break-even prizes.

Doesn't sound too promising.

As part of my experiment, I have decided to keep a running total of wins and losses, plus my total dollar investment and net results. Similar to what I do with my sports betting.

As you may recall, my initial attempt to win a little coin from the state was a failure. The "Trim the Tree" $5 scratch-off didn't hit, so I'm down five buckos.

Since it's Super Bowl week, I decided to purchase a "Dallas Cowboys" $5 scratch off for two reasons. First, I figure it will be one of the few times that the words "Cowboys" and "Super Bowl" will be mentioned in the same sentence and two, since the Cowboys were 8-8 the last three years, I fully expect to win $5 on this ticket. Break even- like the Cowboys :)

Cash prizes on the ticket range from $5 to $100,000, plus there are other non-cash prizes such as a draft day pass that allows you to sit in the "War Room" with Jerry Jones as he screws up another draft. I'd rather suffer thru a root canal.

The ticket has five numbers across the top that are "Winning Numbers." If one of your 20 numbers match, you win that prize. Should a football symbol appear, you win that prize. If a "TD" symbol appears, you win all 20 prizes. Wouldn't that be nice.

Let's get started, shall we?

As you can see below, we have revealed the five "Winning Numbers" which have been anything but for the first half of the ticket. Hopefully, it'll be a second half ticket :)

Well, the third quarter was more of the same.

After the last five numbers are cleared, it appears we have a total loser for the second week in a row.

Hopefully, next week will be better.

Peacocks and Chess Sets

I've heard that you need a catchy headline for your blog posts in order to get your readers to notice.

Pretty catchy, huh?

Unfortunately, the story isn't as interesting as the headline.

Ms. Duck and I are driving to Dallas tomorrow to attend the Dallas Market. We'll spend the day searching for interesting and unusual items to sell in our side business. When we are done we'll go to a nice restaurant and decide what items are worth buying for resale. Saturday we'll head back to market and place our orders.

We've found that items with a peacock theme seem to fly off the shelves. Be it trays, mirrors, statues, etc, we've sold them all and need to restock.

Another item that has been hot for us over the years has been themed chess sets. The favorites are the Civil War set, the World War II set and the Alamo set. The pieces are hand-painted and have some nice detail. The WW II set for example has FDR in his wheelchair as the king of the American pieces and Hitler leading the Germans. They wholesaled for $39 and we sold them all day for $129, a nice profit. The problem is that our supplier went out of business, leaving us without stock and looking for a new source.

So peacocks and chess sets will be our main goal over the next couple of days.

Ms. Duck and I have found a good source for furniture items here locally. There's an auction house in nearby Crawford (Prez Bush's old stomping grounds) that we have been buying from for a little over a year. At the last auction we attended, we were able to buy a nice mahogany secretary/bookcase for $125. It was a little beat up and required some refinishing, but after three hours of work we got the result below and put a $600 price tag on it. We've had a lot of luck purchasing similar items there and marking them up for a nice profit. With Ms. Duck still unemployed (for 10 months), it's been a nice source of income.

Here's hoping for a good market. Peacocks and chess sets...that's the ticket!

Texas Lottery Chronicles-"Trim the Tree"

I received a $5 scratch-off lottery ticket titled "Trim the Tree" as a stocking stuffer this Christmas and it got me to wondering how bad an investment a lottery ticket really is. On the back of the ticket it states that my odds are 1:3.83, and that includes break-even prizes.

Doesn't sound too promising.

As part of my experiment, I have decided to keep a running total of wins and losses, plus my total dollar investment and net results. Similar to what I do with my sports betting.

"Trim the Tree" has several ways to win. There are 20 prizes on the ticket and if you have a star next to a prize, you win that prize. If your scratching reveals a bell, you multiply your cash prize by 10.

Hell yeah!

The "jackpot" as it were, is the wreath symbol. Get that one and you collect all the prizes on the ticket.

That's what I'm talkin' about!

Let's get started, shall we?

As you can see below, the top half of the ticket has been disappointing. However, if the elusive wreath symbol shows, I already have $102,750 tallied up. Hope springs eternal!

Well, looks like we whiffed on our Christmas ticket. Nothing like being 0 for $404,435. That's quite a slump!

Hopefully the next one will be more profitable. It certainly won't be less so :)

$17 on Anaheim (-165) over Vancouver
The Ducks have won 17 of their last 18 and are 19-2 on home ice this season. They have already beaten the Canucks twice this year and have won 7 of the last 9 between the two teams. Vancouver has lost 6 of 7, but are a respectable 12-12 on foreign soil.

Vegas or Bust Poker League

The ninth of 12 league tournaments was held last Friday. All 10 league members were present as the first card was tossed in the air.

Seated clockwise around the table was Dealer Larry, Philly Phanatic, Stamps, J-Dawg, Lil' Annie Okie, Bobby Dee, Tin Man, Big Daddy, Ranger Rick, and your humble correspondant, Lucki Duck.

The top two league finishers win an all expenses paid trip to Las Vegas, plus a buy in to one of the preliminary WSOP events this summer. I won the December tourney, which moved me into second place, one point ahead of Philly Phanatic. So my focus was to finish ahead of him.

I started slowly, folding hand after hand before finally peeking down at A-K and raised 3X the BB from early position. The only call I got was from Big Daddy, who is certainly the most difficult player to read at the table. The flop was K-Q-4, a good one for me. Big Daddy checked and I bet $150, which was a little over 1/2 pot and got a call. A seven on the turn looked harmless, but Big Daddy bet $50. I read it as a blocking bet, but I HATE getting into big pots early in a tournament, especially against this particular opponent. Rather than raising, I smooth called. When he checked the river, I thought I was good, but check behind anyway...just in case :) Big Daddy tabled Q-4 for a flopped two pair and drug the pot. How you can call a raise out of position with Q-4 offsuit is beyond me, but that's why I try to avoid playing big pots with Big Daddy.

The next hand I was involved in was once again with Big Daddy. I raised from middle position with T-T and was called by...you guessed it...Big Daddy. He had limped from early position, so I put him on a range from pocket aces to 7-2 offsuit :)

We saw a flop of 8-8-8, so I bet 1/2 pot after he checked. Big Daddy immediately shoved, a huge overbet.

"I believe that's called a check-raise!" cackled Tin Man, laughing at my obvious distress.

Since my main goal was finishing ahead of Philly, I folded my full house and was shown pocket aces by Big Daddy. Like I said, he's hard to read.

Later in the tourney I received Big Slick once again. but missed the flop and folded to a bet from Big Daddy, who was in position this time. I was now down to $500 from my starting stack of $1500, and no one had busted out. One thing I did not want was a last place finish!

Just a couple hands later the two big stacks, Philly and Big Daddy got involved in a big pot. When the smoke cleared, Big Daddy's rivered flush felted Philly and his top two pair. This was great for me, but I don't understand what Philly was thinking in this hand. His main focus should have been to finish ahead of me, and I was the short stack at the table when he busted. Go figure.

With blinds at $50-100, I once again looked down at A-K and shoved my last $400 receiving3 calls. With my history with Big Slick on this evening, I didn't feel very confident, even after I flopped top pair. The Turn and river didn't help me, so I didn't hold much hope fot top pair winning against 3 random hands, but it did! Now with $1600 I was back in the game. Sometimes it's better to be lucky than good.

The blinds were getting high and players started dropping quickly. With Philly already out, Stamps was next, followed by Big Daddy, Lil' Annie Okie, and Tin Man. I busted Dealer Larry in fifth, but then fell on my sword with a fourth place finish. Not as good as I had hoped, but considering how short I had gotten earlier, I was pleased with my standing.

Bobby Dee placed, J-Dawg showed and Ranger Rick won the tournament.

Annie still leads the league by a substantial margin and I was able to extend my lead over Philly by three points. CLICK HERE for the latest standings.

Only three more tourneys to go. Hope I can hold on!

Till next time, win the flips.
