Just When You Thought It Couldn't Get Worse

Q: "Why do you keep hitting yourself over the head with that hammer?"

A: "Because it feels so good when I stop."

Thank God that's over.

My hope for my favorite team was to keep the losses below 100 this season. They blew by that number two weeks ago, racking up a club record 111 losses, ending the season by dropping their last 15 games.

Fifteen! Geez.

That's 324 losses in the past three seasons. There's no joy in Mudville right now.

They also set a major league record for most strikeouts in a season, shattering the old record by whiffing 19 times in yesterday's game. If you can't hit the ball, you can't move runners around the bases. If you can't move runners, you can't score. If you can't score, you can't win. To quote the title of former Astro Larry Dierker's book, "This Ain't Brain Surgery."

Houston does have one of the strongest minor league programs in baseball. I can't wait for help to arrive.

Ever the optimist, I'm sure that when Spring Training begins in February, I'll start looking in my tool box for that hammer.

BAM! BAM! BAM!

OUCH!

  1. Lol, those Houston Lastros never disappoint. Go Rangers! Rangers need to beat the Rays tonight. There's always next year for the Lastros.

    1. At least you don't have Al Davis to deal with anymore.

  3. As a life-long Cubs fan, I understand completely,,,,,Even tho I'm only 35, I've still seen more than my fair share of losses, disappointments, and struggles.....not to mention all of the "wait until next year" seasons.....

    2. Looking at the farm system today compared to wen Theo and Jed came aboard, the Cubs are in a much better place. Now they just need some of them to turn into stars, and find some pitching help, and the Cubs could be competing for a playoff spot by 2015 or 2016. Things are looking up but it's still rough every year.

    3. I think we're probably in the same boat. Just have to wait and see how many prospects develop into solid major leaguers.

  4. One thing I like about your manager is that he kept them playing hard. It looks like at the end, he could even do that and they gave up. Help is on the way.
