NFL Picks Contest- Enter Today!

It's BAAAAACKKKK!!!

If you participated in my NFL Picks Contest the last two years (and your name isn't Memphis MOJO), I hope you'll sign up for this contest and try to redeem your name. Right now, you're a loser and an embarrassment to both your family and the blogging community.

MOJO has won the first two contests and will be back to see if he can 3Peat.

Are you the one to take him down?

Here's your chance to redeem yourself.

You don't have to be a blogger, all readers of this missive are welcome to join in the fun!

Once again, the winner will receive either a tee shirt or sweatshirt with the logo of your favorite NFL team emblazoned on it. Cool!

Here are the rules;

1) You pick the winner of one NFL game each week. Must be a Sunday or Monday game (no Thursday or Saturday games).

2) If your pick wins, you receive 10 points.

3) You will receive additional points based on margin of victory. One point for each point your team wins by. For example, if you pick the Steelers to win this week and they are victors by a score of 29-17, you would receive 22 points for the week, 10 for the win and 12 for the margin of victory (29 minus 17 = 12).

4) If your pick loses, you receive 0 points for picking the winner and points will be deducted based on margin of loss. For example, if you picked the Raiders and they lost by a score of 30-14, you would have 16 points deducted from your point total (30 minus 14 = 16).

5) The person with the most points at the conclusion of the Super Bowl will be declared the winner and will receive a free shirt. If there is a tie, whomever picked the most "winners" on the season will win the tie breaker. If there is still a tie, then all players who are tied for first will receive a shirt.

Sign up today by either commenting below or e-mailing me at nfl.picks@ymail.com. Deadline to sign up is September 6th and your pick will also need to be in by 6pm (CDT) that same day.

Thursday and Saturday games are not eligible for this contest (too hard for me to keep up with), but that still leaves the majority of each week's schedule (Sunday and Monday) from which to choose.

Sign up today and let's have some fun!

"Not So" Small Potatoes Poker

Our regular Friday night poker game was cancelled, so I decided to join Bobby Dee at another game where the stakes were quite a bit higher than our usual ten and twenty cent blinds.

I was placed in the 8 seat and was fortunate to have the two tightest players at the table to my left. I pulled two Benjamens from my pocket and we were under way in this $1-2 no limit hold'em cash game.

After only a few hands I picked up A-K in early position and raised to $7. Four callers later I realized that seven bucks was not a big enough bet to thin the field at this table. I whiffed the jack high flop and c-bet $15, receiving a call from one player. Another blank on the turn and I shot a second bullet with a $30 bet and again received a call. A queen on the river and I put my opponent all in with a $50 bet. I wanted to show the rest of the table I was capable of betting strong without a made hand, figuring it would give me action later in the evening when I did have a good hand.

I did get that accomplished, but it cost me over $100 when the villain flipped over two pair. So in less than one lap around the table, I was reloading with another Benny.

Not much later, I was in late position with pocket nines when I limped in behind three others. The K-9-5 flop hit me between the eyes and I was pleased when the loosest player at the table bet out for $15. One other player called and I did likewise. Another 5 on the turn gave me a boat and I smooth called a $20 bet and call by my opponents. The river brought a seemingly innocent 7 and Mr. Loose Aggressive tossed 5 redbirds out. The next to act min raised to $50 which left me in a quandary.

Mr. LAGGY had $27 more behind and I figured he would call if I did. The second player had $110 behind, but I worried he might fold if I 4 bet, so I opted to call his $50 three bet. Mr. Laggy went all in for two more dollars. Of course Mr. Three Bet and I both called. The only hands that could beat me was pocket kings or pocket fives. I wasn't worried about the kings since he hadn't raised, but he was the BB, so pocket fives wasn't impossible. I was relieved when he turned over 7-5 for a boat, but my nines full took down a nice pot. Mr LAGGY mucked, so I don't know what he had.

I was pleased to win the pot, but I know I misplayed the hand and  left some money on the table. Looking back, I believe Mr. Three Bet would have pushed in the rest of his chips with his full house. Grrrr...

I continued to get playable hands and connecting with the board. I hit sets on the flop two more times and got paid on both. I also won two hands in a row with 6-5. I was the BB on the first and checked a limped pot only to hit two pair on the flop. I bet and received one customer. The turn brought another 5, giving me a boat and I bet out again.

Call.

I bet big on the river when a third spade hit the board, hopefully giving my opponent a flush. I got the call I wanted, but it was because he completed a straight on the river. My opponent in the hand was the same one I had tried to bluff earlier, so I guess my advertising paid off in this instance.

As the SB on the next hand, I once again peeked down at 6-5. With numerous limps in front of me, I tossed in another dollar and saw a Yahtzee flop of 7-8-9 rainbow. I bet strong and was called by a tight player to my immediate left. I put him all-in when an ace hit the turn and he flipped over pocket aces. I was very surprised, because he had not raised preflop from the BB, even after so many players had limped. He was just asking to have his rockets cracked.

"Pair the board!" he shouted at the dealer before the river.

But it was not to be on this night, for it was MY night.

What's better than a loose game when you are getting good cards and plenty of action? And the hands hold up for the most part.

SAH-WEET!

By the time the dust cleared on the evening, I walked away around $400 to the good. Hardly Small Potatoes for this ol' boy :)

So, I'll be going back again and will do a write-up when I do.

I doubt the results will be anywhere as good as I've reported here, but you never know!

Till next time, win the flips.

Casino Party. Old School!

As many of you know, Ms. Duck and I have a sideline business that hosts casino parties in the Waco area (CLICK HERE for more info on the biz).

We had a party that was a little out of the ordinary yesterday. It was strange in a couple ways. First, it was held in the middle of the day (2-4pm), when almost all of them are at night. Second, it was at a retirement home.

I usually run our craps table, and it's hard enough to explain the game to the average person. To attempt to explain it to senior citizens brings it to a whole new level of difficulty. But, when all was said and done, everyone had a blast and learned how to make a pass line bet with odds, a place bet, field bet, and hard way bet.

"7 come 11! Grandbaby need a new pair of shoes!"

Ms. Duck directing traffic at the roulette table.
In addition to the casino games, there was food, and live music with dancing. An all around good time.

The name of the band?

The Morticians.

At a retirement home.

Gotta love the irony!

Pickin' and Grinnin'

Remember the old show "Hee Haw?"

There was a skit that Roy Clark and Buck Owens did where they would play the banjo and guitar a little, then stop and tell a terrible joke.

Buck- "I'm a pickin!"

Roy- "And I'm a grinnin!"

Don't know who that guy in the middle is :)

With football season about to kick off (see what I did there?), I took a few minutes to look back at my sports handicapping results over the last year. Although I won't be retiring on my winnings, or making a living at it like Coach is striving to do, I was pleased with my results, so I guess you could say I was grinnin' at my pickin'... or something like that.

My hockey results are the most satisfying to me. After posting a losing year in my first attempt at handicapping hockey, I was able to turn it around for a $76 profit last season. Football was a little disappointing, but I still managed to book an $85 win.

Basketball was strong for me last season, adding $148 to my bankroll, but as expected, baseball was my most profitable, bringing in a $195 "windfall."

So, 4 for 4 on the major sports. Hopefully the streak will continue through another rotation!

The NFL season is just around the corner and I will again be hosting the NFL Picks contest. First prize will be another NFL team shirt. We'll have to see if anyone can unseat two-time defending champion Memphis Mojo. I'll put a post up explaining the rules and how to enter sometime next week.

Finally, a moment to thank all of you who visit this little corner of the interwebs. I appreciate you taking the time and especially look forward to your comments.

Cancer Returns-Update

Mom with my older sister.

When we last met, Mom was trying to decide whether to proceed with the radiation and chemo therapy that had been prescribed. Her weight was a slight 85 pounds and our fear was additional weight loss. When you're that small there is not much of a cushion.

My sisters were both leaning towards not having the treatment, because the chance of remission was not good (35% at best). My thought was that 35% is a lot better that 0% and she should go for it. If our fears (sickness and weight loss) were realized, she could suspend the treatment knowing she had at least given it her best shot.

So, she decided to go for it.

The protocol called for six chemo sessions and 30 radiation treatments over a six week period. The radiation is in her upper lung and also very near her esophagus, which could cause her throat to become very sore, thus making it hard to swallow. Because of that, the doctors suggested a feeding tube be implanted to help with her nutrition requirements.

She decided to pass on the tube.

Mom will complete her twentieth radiation treatment today and has already had four chemo sessions. Thus far her weight has held pretty steady, with only a two pound weight loss. She has developed thrush (from the chemo) which is causing a fair amount of discomfort, but she is being treated for that and we hope she'll start to feel better this weekend.

Although she was prescribed nausea drugs, she has still gotten sick several times over the last month and the radiation has made her very tired, so she sleeps a lot.

Overall, I am pleased with how she's doing. And very impressed with the fight she is putting up.

Two more weeks and she will be finished with this part of the journey. The doctors will let the chemo and radiation percolate for a few weeks and then start testing to see if it worked.

I expect we will all experience a high when the treatment is done, and then high anxiety as the test date draws near.

Please keep Mom in your thoughts and prayers as she continues the battle.

A Day at the Auction

Several times a year, Ms. Duck and I attend estate auctions at an auction house in Prez Bush's old stomping grounds (Crawford). We purchase treasures, clean or repair them, then resell them in our booth or online.

While attending last Saturday, the auctioneer asked $25 for a parakeet vase.

Crickets.

"$20? How 'bout $15 then? $10? $5?"

More crickets.

"$4, $3, $2?"

I bid, figuring how wrong can you go for two bucks?

"What are you doing?" asked my lovely wife.

"Making money!"

Ms. Duck: *eye roll*

After looking at our treasure I'm afraid she may be right :)

Unfazed, I bid ten bucks on a pair of peach pheasants.

Another eye roll from you know who :)

But, they are 15" tall, so I'm pretty sure I can sell them for more than $5 each. Right?

I made it up by placing the winning $10 bid on the face vase Ms. Duck had her eye on.

My best investment of the day.

Peace offering.

Win, win!
