Vegas or Bust Poker League

The Vegas or Bust Poker League met for the tenth of 12 league tournaments last Friday. At stake is two seats in the 2014 WSOP in Las Vegas along with airfare and hotel for our top two finishers at the end of league play.

Seated at the table were Philly Phanatic, Big Daddy, Ranger Rick, Tin Man, J-Dawg, Bobby Dee, Stamps, Dealer Larry, Lil' Annie Okie, and your humble reporter.

We were all a little surprised that Larry showed as his mother was under hospice care with the end expected at any time. But as Larry explained it, he just needed to get away from the tension for a little while and the room was full of family members. As soon as he busted out of the tourney he headed back to the hospital.

As in our January tournament I started in second place, with Philly on my heels for the second seat. Needless to say, I wasn't happy that he was seated to my immediate left. My primary goal was to finish ahead of him and widen my lead.

League leader Annie busted first when she overplayed her pocket queens and ran into Ranger Rick's flopped set of jacks. Stamps was next to fall on his sword, followed by Dealer Larry. I took most of Larry's chips in a battle of the blinds. Larry completed from the SB and I peeked at a 6-3 offsuit and checked. The flop from hell appeared for him (6-6-6) and we both checked. He bet when a queen hit the turn and I smooth called with my quads, hoping he really did have a queen. A second queen appeared on the river and Larry once again bet. I three bet and took most of his chips when he called. He didn't show, but I can't imagine him calling with anything less than a Q in his hand.

Philly was next to drop when he pushed into Rick's quad fives, putting me in position to pull a little further ahead of him.

We played six handed for quite a while, but as the blinds increased Bobby Dee and J-Dawg received toe tags. I was next to go when Big Daddy called my push with 9-2 off and hit his duck on the flop. It sounds like a worse call than it actually was. I was short stacked and he had decent pot odds to make the call with ATC. And did. Buh-bye.

Tin Man finished third and Rick won for the second straight month by besting Big Daddy heads up.

You can CLICK HERE for the latest standings. I'm in pretty good shape with only two tournaments left. As long as I finish in the middle of the pack in both of them I should be on my way to Vegas again this summer. Keeping my fingers crossed :)

Ending on a sad note, Dealer Larry's mother passed away just a few hours after he returned from our tournament. Condolences to Larry and his dad, Ollie the Accountant. Ms. Duck and I will attend her funeral service tomorrow afternoon.

Till next time, win the flips.

Basketball Picks, February 20th

Three games on the roll tonight are worth a look.

$21 @ -105 on Texas A&M (-1 1/2) over Alabama
The Aggies are 13-2 in College Station this season and are 62-12 at home against unranked opponents. The Tide has dropped 5 of their last 6 games and are 0-8 on the highway. If A&M can slow down Trevor Releford (26 ppg in his last 3 games), the Aggies should leave with a smile on their face.
$11 @ -105 on Hawaii (-3) over UC Irvine
The Rainbow Warriors beat the Anteaters 90-86 in OT last month. Hawaii is 7-2 in their last 9 games and are 12-4 defending their home court this season. UC Irvine has run off 4 straight wins, surrendering an average of only 55 ppg with their stellar defense. It'll be Hawaii's shooting against the Anteater's defense and rebounding which includes 7'6" Ndiaya patrolling the lanes.
$18 on Michigan State (-180) over Purdue
The Spartans are 21-5 this season and 7-1 on foreign soil. They've won 6 of their last 10 and have beaten the Boilermakers 5 straight times. Purdue has lost 5 of their last 7, but are an impressive 12-2 at home.

Two terrible teams meet, with the host Chippewas losing 11 of their last 12 and the Cardinals dropping 7 straight. Central Michigan is 6-6 on their home court while Ball State has yet to win a roadie, posting a 0-11 record. That makes the Chippies "less worse."
 $11 @ -105 on Cincinnati (-6 1/2) over Central Florida
The Bearcats come to the party posting an impressive 23-3 record. The host Knights have dropped 9 of their last 10 and are 0-4 ATS as a home dog this season. Cincy beat Central Florida by 18 points last month.

Ole Miss has dropped 4 of 6, but are 10-3 at home this season, including a perfect 5-0 in conference play. Should be a good one, but the Wildcats will win the battle of the boards.
$11 @ -105 on Miami (-2) over Dallas

Football Picks, Season Wrap Up

Another football season is in the books, with a small addition to the ol' bankroll.

I guess any win is a good win, but I was a little disappointed that the season wasn't more profitable.

Had my Super Bowl pick won, I would have at least broken the $100 profit mark, but who knew the Broncos would bring such a mushroom cloud of suck with them to New Jersey.

College ball kicks off in August and we'll do it again.

Starting Bankroll                           $1,500.00
Profit/Loss                                      $85.50

NFL Picks Contest- It's MOJO, Back2Back!

It's Memphis MOJO's world and we're just in it.

I described MOJO in an earlier post, and it seems like a good time to revive it:
We all thought we knew Memphis MOJO. Much like Clark Kent is a mild mannered reporter working for the Daily Planet, MOJO is the mild mannered bridge and poker player from western Tennessee.

Little did we know that he was born on the planet KickUrAss, and when he looks in the mirror he sees a testosterone fueled, macho, Chuck Norris stunt double that will lay a three sixty roundhouse flying monkey kick to your ass that will cause you to have to part your hair in order to take a dump.

While you and I pour over stats and tendencies trying to pick winners, black belt, super-ninja MOJO is at the gym slammin' the pecs and making the ladies all tingly. After a quick stop at the tat parlor for a touch up, MOJO mounts his Harley and winds it out on his way back to his bad-ass man cave to concentrate on his pick. Using his super-ninja powers, he enters a trance-like state and with his superior mental discipline, focuses on the big winner for the week.
Much like the Seahawks, MOJO blows open a close contest to take the trophy, a brand new tee shirt or sweat shirt with the logo of his favorite NFL team. Unlike Seattle, MOJO has defended his title, so not even the Seahawks are his equal.

Since MOJO already owns a Tennessee Titans shirt from last year, I'll open up the prize chest and let him pick his favorite baseball or basketball team. I think I'm personally providing MOJO's wardrobe :)

MOJO's favorite baseball team is the Cardinals and basketball team is the Grizzlies. I guess that means that even super-ninja MOJO isn't perfect. (Just kidding Ninja...don't hit me!)

All kidding aside, congratulations MOJO. Picking NFL games ain't easy and you have proved worthy of the task.

Thank you to all who participated. We'll do it again in September.

Football Picks, February 2nd

Super Bowl Sunday is upon us as the Seahawks and Broncos close the curtains on another football season.

$10 on Denver (-2) over Seattle
Who is better prepared to play a football game than Peyton Manning? No one. Yeah, Seattle has the top rated defense, but they haven't run up against the likes of Manning. He'll read the defense, change the play, and put the ball where it needs to go. Look for a Bronco victory, led by one of the all-time greats.

Starting Bankroll                           $1,500.00
Profit/Loss                                      $95.50
