Moving Day in Vegas

Ms. Duck and I have worn out our welcome (and our comped nights) at the Orleans and will be taking our dog and pony show to Green Valley Ranch. We got a nice weekend rate ($59 night) there, so we'll be in Henderson for a couple days and then move to Vdara for the remainder of the trip.

We've been busy the first few days here, visiting Hoover Dam, the Hacienda Casino in Boulder City, the Red Rock, Sunset Station, Monte Lago, Sams, and of course, the Orleans.

View of Bellagio from our table at PF Changs
Yesterday we hit the strip for the first time, eating lunch at PF Changs, then playing for a while at Planet Hollywood.

From there, we trekked down to MGM, then NYNY and Monte Carlo.

The only live poker thus far was a three hour session at Sams, playing 2-6 limit. It was a good session as I walked away $90 to the good.

Video poker has not been good for either Ms Duck or myself, but I'm confident she will hit something big soon to make up the deficit :)

Two days till my WSOP tourney!

Till next time, win the flips.

Vegas Baby!

Ms Duck and I made to Vegas yesterday and are residing at the Orleans for the next four days. As evidenced in the photo below, we have a nice view of the strip.

The trip got off to a good start before it even began. As I was finishing packing, I grabbed my pile of player's cards and saw a $5 bill nestled in the stack. Even better, he had some friends with him! After unfolding and counting the bills, it came to $675. WIN!

The 90 minute trip to the Austin airport, including the last 40 miles in an 80 mph speed limit (gotta love Texas), was uneventful. While strolling thru the airport waiting for our flight, I spotted a $20 on the floor, calling to me. I graciously adopted the homeless Jackson, giving it shelter in my front pocket. Win again!

Upon arrival in Vegas, Ms. Duck and I checked in at the Orleans, then drove to the Rio where I registered for event 7 of the WSOP.

In it to win it Bay-Bee!

We slept in this morning and will probably hang out on the strip today. The plan (which is very fluid) is to take a drive to the Grand Canyon and take a gander tomorrow. Ms. Duck saw it as a child, but I have never seen it and she insisted I go. I'm easily impressed with nature and its miracles, so I'm pretty stoked about it.

I'll update as time allows.

Till next time, win the flips.

#1 is #1... Again!

Going up against the big boys and coming out on top... priceless!

Vegas or Bust!

Ms. Duck and I will fly out of Austin on Monday via Southwest Airlines heading for Las Vegas. As one of two winners in our Vegas or Bust Poker League, the trip is pretty much paid for, including my buy in to event 7 at the WSOP. We are staying for 11 days, so we will have some out of pocket expenses, but it shouldn't be too bad.

Since we are staying so long, we have decided to take a few side trips that we never had time to on previous visits. The Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, and possibly a drive to Laughlin to meet up with Dealer Larry are on the agenda.

I'm also hoping to meet lightning (and possibly Memphis Mojo) for dinner. With a little luck I'll get to pitch a few cards with grrouchie and try to get back the money he took off of me last year :) Perhaps some other bloggers will be around? Let me know, I'd love to meet you.

Till next time, win the flips.

BS !!!

In Psychology.

Lucki, Graduate, Sonny Boy, and Ms. Duck

The Duck family took a 90 minute drive northwest to the sleepy little college town of Stephenville, home of Tarleton State University. The Texans for those who care.

Got it!

The occasion was to see my daughter Meridith receive her diploma. After a year of screwing off, she got serious about her school work and has not only gotten her bachelors degree, but also snagged a Graduate Assistance job. Even better, it's a paying position! Nice.

She begins her Masters program in a couple weeks, so it'll be a short summer.

A few years ago :)

It doesn't seem that long ago that I was picking her up from elementary school. It's gone by fast.

A great weekend for our family, especially for one proud Dad!

Vegas or Bust Poker League

Our second season of our Vegas or Bust Poker League began last Friday.

We had ten runners seated at the table for the first tournament. From left to right on your radio dial were Big Daddy, Dealer Larry, Lil' Annie Okie, Tin Man, Ranger Rick, Bobby Dee, Stamps, J-Dawg, Philly Phanatic, and yours truly, Lucki Duck.

One addition this season is a $20 high hand pot. Philly won it early when his pocket kings turned into a full house, which also knocked Big Daddy out in tenth place.

Newcomer Ranger Rick was next to go, which surprised me because he's one of the better players. I expect better days are ahead for him.

Philly rivered Tin Man to felt him in seventh, followed by Stamps in sixth.

I was on the ropes when I lost two big pots to Annie and Philly. I shoved my stack  in with A-K soooted and rivered the nut flush. Whew!

J-Dawg was next to fall on his sword, with Bobby Dee out not much later.

Dealer Larry got off to a fast start, but later had a run of bad cards and finished in fourth.

Down to three players, Annie toe-tagged Philly and we were heads up. Annie had a huge chip advantage, but the blinds were high which gave me a chance.

I had a nice run of cards early in the heads up match and combined with a few steals, was able to pull ahead. I raised on the final hand will pocket jacks and Annie shoved with A-J. She was unable to improve and I was able to ship the opening tourney!

It's always nice to get off to a good start :) Click here for the results.

Because of trips to the WSOP by myself and Stamps, our June tournament won't be until the 28th. We should get back on our regular second Friday of the month schedule.

Although it was nice to win, the tournament was far from being the best part of my weekend! Stay tuned, I'll be posting about a big event within a day or two.

Till next time, win the flips.

For the first time we had live music at the event and it added a lot to the atmosphere. The band was named 10th Leper and they covered a few 70s and 80s pop tunes, but mostly played Christian rock. Their first number was "Amazing Grace," played to the tune of Jimmy Hendrix "Foxy Lady."

Interesting.

A couple of sisters lining up the putt.
We also added a few games for the kids to play when they tired of flying kites. Our raffle was a big hit, with the Tony Romo autographed photo being the hot item. (No comments from any of you haters!) Baylor football tickets were also popular, which amazes me. I guess it's true what they say, "Win and they will come."

Boy Scouts selling sausage on a stick.
Several of the vendors ran out of food, so I take that as a good sign!

I've been Chairman of the club (Heart of Texas Sertoma Club) for the past two years, and President the two years proceeding. This was our last major event before the new officers take over in July and I'm looking forward to ceding the reins. It's been a lot of work, but well worth it.

Here are a few more pictures from the Kitefest.

A hearing impaired boy joins the band for a set. Good stuff!

The Chick-Fil-A cow pointing out the advantage of eating chicken to a kiddo.

Only 100 shy of a full cast for the movie :)
We even had people flying kites!

A Friend Passes

The call came from Lil' Annie Okie.

"I just got a call from Sarah... Bev passed away last night."

I have to admit, I wasn't exactly shocked at the news, but damn. She fought such a long battle as I described in a post several months ago, and seemed to be getting the upper hand.

I called her daughter Sarah immediately and expressed my condolences to both her and her dad.

"Heart failure," she said. "The doctors said her heart would probably give out before her kidneys because of the strain of dialysis. She went quickly and painlessly, that's all you can ask."

Yeah, I guess.

I nicknamed her "Bluffin' Bev" several years ago because she almost NEVER bluffed. I finally talked her into making a few moves, which resulted in her winning a few chips and putting a smile on her face. But, as with most of us, she reverted back to her same style, so the nickname stayed.

A good soul with an infectious laugh. I'll miss you Bev... and I'm not bluffin'.

Rest in peace my friend.
